St. Mary,s Pirton Village Church

Pirton with its Motte and Bailey castle at Toot Hill, and the site to the north of the village that is thought to be the location of an Anglo Saxon village and also has evidence of two Ring Ditches, of Bronze or Iron Age.

As you can see from the image there is little or no sign of the settlement or Ring Ditches, now it is a meadow.

Toot Hill Motte and Bailey

The Motte and Bailey Castle stood above a small village, that during the period after the Black death declined and the southern part of the village was abandoned, traces of the lanes and building can be seen in the field to the southwest of the church.
